In the morning, head out to Haikou’s Holiday Beach, a long stretch of beach where you can relax, swim, or go for a stroll on the sandy seashore, or the biking/running track that runs along the beachfront. Wander down towards West Beach if you want to learn how to sailboard! For lunch, head down towards Haikou’s Old Town area, and try the seafood and other traditional Hainan dishes at Qilou Snack Street.

In the afternoon, go for a wander in Haidian Island’s Baishamen Park, where you can relax, people watch, go paddle-boating, fly a kite, ride the ferris wheel and roller coasters, or shop for Hainan souvenirs. Baishamen Beach lies on the north side of the park, and is the perfect spot to watch the sunset.

Pristine Moon Bay is the perfect place to watch the sun rise, if you can get there early enough! The 8.3 kilometer white sand beach is bordered by gently lapping blue waves on one side, and lush green trees on the other.

In the afternoon, head deep into the palm tree forest. You will be transfixed by the vast forest of palms, which produces the great majority of Hainan’s coconuts. Where the forest meets the sea, relax on the beach in a hammock strung between two palm trees, sipping a chilled coconut. Why not stay the evening in one of the cute wooden cottages scattered along the shore.

Most of the year, Bo’ao is a sleepy little seaside town, where visitors can enjoy a quiet afternoon at one of the several quaint coffee shops, or stroll through the quiet town streets. Unique Jade Belt Beach is worth a visit. This beach is a narrow strip of sand separating the ocean from the Wanquan River estuary. During Dragon Boat Festival, the town comes alive with excitement and everyone heads down to the water to cheer on the dragon boats.

Avoid visiting during the annual Bo’ao Forum for Asia, when tight security due to visiting heads of state makes most of the town inaccessible to tourists.
