2. Tanmen Fishing Festival
The Tanmen Fishing Festival has roots in the local fishing folk’s unique customs and South Sea fishing culture. The fishermen of Tanmen have been fishing the South China Sea since before the Ming Dynasty, making this the world’s only community to continuously fish the seas of the Xisha and Nansha archipelagoes.
Tanmen Bay has nearly 8 km. of excellent coastline and unique tidal rhythms. Every year in the Summer and Fall, the tides come in and out at different times. Take a walk along the beach, dive deep into the ocean, enjoy the breathtaking and unique geography. Sea creatures abound under the waves, and are exposed at low tide for anyone to see. Collect unusual seashells, go out on a fishing boat, catch your own dinner, see the local fishing ceremonies and sea sacrifices. This fishing community depends on the sea for life, and they have a special relationship with the ocean.
