Since ancient times, “Sanyuesan”, or March 3 on the lunar calendar, has been a time for the local Li and Miao people to mourn the dead, celebrate new life, and sing the praises of local heroes. In the spring time when flowers bloom, and the fragrance of the betel nut floats in the air, the Li and Miao put on beautiful traditional clothing, and join together to celebrate with shanlan rice wine, bamboo rice, and rice filled zongzi, wrapped in bright green leaves. During this festival, they will make sacrifices to ancestors and nature, and pray for good harvests in the coming year.
