Dongzhai Harbour Mangrove Forest 东寨港红树林自然保护区
Haikou Mangrove Forest in Dongzhai Port is one of the best nature attractions in Haikou, and has been placed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Tentative List. The Mangrove Forest in Dongzhai Port is about 50 miles long, covering an area of about 4000 square kilometers. It includes six rivers, along with several bays and tidewater gullies. The mangrove trees grow directly from the shallow water of the harbour, and their intricate root systems anchor the soil, creating an excellent environment for other wildlife to flourish. The mangrove forest is a wetland area where many rare species of plants and animals can be seen. About 159 species of birds inhabit the reserve, including many rare migratory birds. The best time for birdwatching is winter, when the park is filled with thousands of birds escaping the cold weather of northern China. This beautiful nature reserve offers an excellent opportunity to get out of the city and take a non-strenuous nature hike or go on a relaxing boat tour. There is a secret beneath the tranquil waters of the Dongzhai Harbour. In 1605 a devastating earthquake hit the coast, and 72 local villages slid into the sea, where they still lie, underwater to this day.

Haikou Volcano Park 海口石山火山群国家地质公园
Hainan Volcano Park is China's first volcano themed national park. Hainan is home to nearly every variety of volcano in the world, and boasts the best preserved volcano in the country. Hainan Volcano Park is situated to the west of Shishan town in Haikou’s Qiongshan District, approximately 20 kilometers away from downtown Haikou. The large park covers the sites of more than 40 volcanoes and 30 volcanic caves, among which the Wolong Cave and Immortal Cave are especially popular. This attraction is perfect for a day trip from Haikou, a chance to get out of the city and enjoy some nature hiking. The hikes are not strenuous and even families with small children will find many activities suited to the kids, including a small museum of volcanic rocks, lots of interesting geological features to explore, a beautiful view of the countryside from the top of the volcano crater (it's been inactive for a long long time, no worries), a restaurant serving local Hainan food, and a lake.
